Mr. Pagnini, you have truly unique jewelry, which are different from many other designers. What does inspire you?

There are many things that influence my work, I draw inspiration from every single detail and every moment of life. But what really and mostly inspires me, is the love I have for my job and for my art. Every time I start a jewel, also begins a creative journey for me, I let myself be carried by gold and by the shape it takes, and the true inspiration becomes the emotion that I feel at that moment.

Why did you decide to become a jeweler? Could you tell us your story?

I grew up in a richly creative environment and I spent many hours, as a child, in the historical family’s jewelry workshop. I learnt the rudiments of the ancient handcrafted goldsmith techniques at a young age; I made my first little jewel at the age of six years. At the age of 18, having already established a strong and emotional connection with my art, I started my personal creative journey to realize modern and contemporary jewels respecting the traditional and handcrafted goldsmith’s techniques (which are evident in each jewel). My unique approach and characteristic style is evident on each work, which represents a distinct dialogue with past and future. Admired for my exceptional skill and recognized as one of a few Italian master goldsmiths, I have been invited to restore several works of national Italian importance in past years. One of the most noted commissions was to create the Santa Barbara’s Urn (exhibited in Venice inside the San Martino a Burano Church) and a Chalice for Pope Benedict XVI hand crafted from 2 kilos of 18ct yellow gold bullion and embellished it with 40 amethyst, aquamarine, agate and obsidian. Three years ago, I decided to open my new luxury shop in the beautiful city of Florence, devoting myself exclusively to my creative jewelry.

How many years have you been involved in the jewelry business and how many products have you produced during this period?

I dedicated all my life in jewelry business, it is about 25 years that I am involved in. I produced many one-of-a-kind pieces! Consider that I realize about 50 luxury pieces per year, if you do the math they are so many jewels!

Where is your main target?

I could say that my main target is women, mostly American. But that’s not entirely true. In truth my target are all the people who want to sense that a jewel is something different, something special, who desire to feel a new sensation from it, who want to be different from the Big-brand status symbols. And so my people, in reality, my people can be any age and can come from anywhere in the world (as it actually happens).

Why do you work mostly with gold?

Simply because I love gold. I love everything about gold. I love the texture, the color, the elegance, the importance. Everything!

Jewelry made of gold come in different colors and shades, depending on the impurities in gold. In your opinion, is there a fashion for the color of gold? If so, what is the latest trend?

In my opinion, there is only one color of gold and that is its natural color. Unfortunately, its natural color can be preserved only on 24kt, but it is impossible to use it because it is too soft. Therefore, I work using 18kt (never less!), blending it by myself with other metals, but preserving as best I can its original warmth and its finish. I love my gold; it is timeless, and very unique.

How much time do you spend on the production of one piece, starting with the drawings until the final finished product?

It depends according to the technique I am using and the complexity of details. I realized rings in just one week, but also important works in 5 months.  

Which extra interests do you have besides jewelry art?

I love travelling all around the world, especially in Southeast Asia or faraway lands where I can be inspired from very different cultures.
